Wear A High SPF Sunscreen No Matter Your Skin Type

We all know people who use tanning oil when they are out in the sun. It smells great and may get your skin to a golden brown color, but it is not at all good for your skin. It is simply an oil that concentrates more UV rays to be absorbed by your skin. This is NOT a good thing!

These days most of us recognize that tan skin is not healthy skin. It has been damaged by the sun. The trend is heading away from seeing tanned skin as beautiful and more toward healthy skin which hasn’t been marinated in harmful UV rays.

SPF sunscreen is quite the opposite of tanning oil and serves the purpose of reflecting or refracting the UV rays that would otherwise harm your skin. The SPF UV number indicates how much sun protection you are getting.

For example, a 30 SPF sunscreen means that you can be exposed to thirty times more harmful rays than without the lotion before they start burning or harming your skin. Often people say that you can stay in the sun for that many times as long before burning, but this is not strictly true as the sun’s rays are stronger at different times of the day.

Sunscreens come in a wide variety of different SPF (sun protection factor) levels. For those with very sensitive and fair skin, a high SPF sunscreen is necessary to keep from burning. Those with a more olive complexion can use a lower SPF UV protection number.

Of course, sunburn is not the only thing we want to protect against! Even if your skin is not prone to burning, the UVA and UVB rays can still cause damage to your skin. At best your skin may become wrinkled or leathery or have unsightly spots, and at worst you may develop skin cancer!

To avoid these unpleasant and even dangerous outcomes, it is a good idea to wear sunblock that keeps out a maximum amount of both types of UV rays, no matter what your skin type.

It is also important to keep in mind that the lotion does not work indefinitely. It must be properly applied. This means a generous coating needs to be put on fifteen minutes before your sun exposure and after you have been in the sun for ten or fifteen minutes you need to reapply it. After that, apply any time you sweat or swim or you feel it has been rubbed off.

Wearing a high SPF sunscreen will keep your skin healthy both now and in the future. For now you will not have to worry about coming home with a painful sunburn and in the future your skin will look better and be healthier and you will not have to fear skin cancer.
